Work-Related Learning

Fortismere is committed to the ethos of Work Related Learning, Its development within the substantive curriculum and in the wider aspects of school life for all students.

In all years

The programme of work-related learning activities provided by the school will aim to enable all students to learn through work, learn about work and learn for work. To challenge stereo typing and to promote equal opportunities enhancing the curriculum by adding vocational relevance and interest.

These WRL activities aim to raise self-esteem and confidence. Students will engage in mock interviews, understand how subjects relate to the world of work and engage in dialogue with adults other than teachers. Students have the opportunity to become involved in a wide range of activities to both support their learning and how school relates to the world of work.

Our aim is to equip students with the key skills, attitudes and qualities necessary to make a successful transition to adult and working life. To ensure the benefits and experiences gained from work-related learning are valued and where appropriate this work will be assessed, reported on and accredited.

Through these activities and learning opportunities it is our intention that students will be able to Relate their own abilities, attributes and achievements to career intentions and make informed choices based on an understanding of the alternatives.

KS4

Students attend nationally organized careers fairs. In school students select a range of possible careers they are interested in and we organize a specific careers fair where the students have dialogue with professionals. Students do interview techniques and C.V. writing.

KS5

All students are encouraged to complete a work experience placement to support their UCAS application. More and more university courses are asking for evidence of students interest in their chosen courses. Students are also encouraged to take up enrichment courses in their holidays such as Headstart. These courses are excellent in supporting UCAS application.

We have a dedicated Careers advisor who works closely with students and parents giving advice on both career guidance and external courses after KS4 and Sixth Form.
